Lines, Vertical and Horizontal

Assignment: create images using only vertical and horizontal lines.

This was the piece selected for the final submission.  Despite my efforts to create a piece with no representational imagery, I really liked that, afterward this piece reminds me of an industrial skyline, with clouds above.

Line Drawing Project

I listened to one of my favorite songs, "House of Cards," by Radiohead. Using a purple sharpie marker, I let my drawing be influenced by both the vocal performance, and the repetition of the guitar riff.  I also rotated the paper several times throughout the song as well.

Composition, y'all!

This is a photo I took going over the Ravenel Bridge in my hometown of Charleston, SC.  It represents good composition in that there is harmony with the foreground and background, there is symmetrical balance, there is variety of color, and proportion is illustrated between the peaks of the bridge and the lights that line the roadway.   Also the first peak, shown center, is the focal point, but the eyes are led along the length of the cables in all directions.

This tombstone, located in a graveyard in Charleston, illustrates good composition because it incorporates a variety of different colors and shapes, but it also illustrates dominance with the cross which sits asymmetrically off center.

Although I wouldn't say the composition of this photo is "great," I really love how the blue in the image creates movement.  It's also easy to identify the scale of the girl based on her placement in front of the storefront and behind her guitar.

This dog is super cute, but the composition isn't great.  The focus should be his face, but the yellow shoe in the upper right hand corner of the image causes the eyes to move there.  Plus, that the dog is completely centered detracts from composition.  If this image was cropped, eliminating the shoe and placing the dog off center, I think the composition would be dramatically increased.
